(June 12, 2012)… Hamilton Nationals Head Coach Regy Thorpe is among the top nominees for the National Lacrosse League’s Hall of Fame Class of 2012. The gritty defenseman guided the Rochester Knighthawks (NLL) to six title games and 13 playoff berths in 15 seasons. Fans still have until Thursday, June 14th to submit their suggestions via the NLL Facebook page.
Thorpe spent his entire career in Rochester, where he stands as the team’s all-time leader in games played (193), loose balls (966) and penalty minutes (385). The Elbridge, NY native was an original Knighthawks, joining the team in its inaugural season in 1995.
He even served as a player/general manager in 2009. More importantly, Thorpe stands as the only player in team history to play for the first two championship teams: 1997 and 2007. In 2005, the defensive stalwart was also named to the Knighthawks’ All-Time Team. In 2011, he was inducted into the Knighthawks’ Hall of Fame.
This weekend, Thorpe leads the Hamilton Nationals into a huge test on Saturday, June 16th at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium. The Nationals will battle the first-place Chesapeake Bayhawks at 7:00 p.m. in Annapolis. Md. The game is the fourth road game of the season for Hamilton, who opens the season with five of its first seven games away from the “Steel City.” The contest will be broadcast on www.herbfm.com. The game will also be televised live on ESPN3.com.
