SNIDER NAMED DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Toronto Nationals midfielder and face-off specialist, Geoff Snider has been named Major League Lacrosse’s Defensive Player of the Week for Week 10 of the 2009 regular season. This is Snider’s first honour this season and third career nod.

In Saturday’s 19-9 win over the Long Island Lizards, Snider proved to be a threat on all ends of the field. He took away 21-of-31 face-offs for a 67% winning percentage and recorded three points from two goals and an assist.  Snider also scooped 17 groundballs on the night for Toronto’s transition game, a season-high for groundballs for any players in a single game.

“It was great to be able to get a win on Saturday night especially in front of such a great crowd at Shuart Stadium,” said Snider. “I'm honoured to be recognized by the league but the recognition is directly correlated to the guys on the Nationals. We have such a gritty team of high calibre lacrosse players; everyone on our team makes you a better player and helps you elevate your own game.”

So far this season Snider has tallied 19 points from 12 goals, including a 2-point goal, and six assists. He leads the League in both groundballs (76) and penalty minutes (16.5). Known as a tough and physical player, nine of Snider’s penalty minutes came on June 4 in Annapolis, Maryland against the Washington Bayhawks, setting a new league record for most penalty minutes in a single game.

“Geoff is a really good athlete, he could play defence or offence,” said Nationals head coach Dave Huntley. “I think he’s the only faceoff guy in the league that can actually play lacrosse and stay in the game.”

Before joining the Nationals for their inaugural season Snider played three seasons with the Denver Outlaws, drafted in the second round out of the University of Denver.

The League has also announced Ryan Boyle of the Boston Cannons as Offensive Player of the Week and Max Seibald from the Denver Outlaws receives Cascade Rookie of the Week honours.

The Toronto Nationals return home after two games on the road this Thursday, July 23 when they play the Boston Cannons. Game time is set for 7:30 p.m. ET at BMO Field.
